Japan PM expresses disapproval of US latest tariff move
Addressing a government meeting, Ishiba emphasized that Japan would continue engaging in bilateral discussions with the U.S. in pursuit of a deal that benefits both sides, according to local reports.
The U.S. announced on Monday that it would introduce a 25% tariff on imports from Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia starting August 1. President Trump signed an executive order confirming that these reciprocal tariffs would take effect from that date.
Ishiba reiterated Tokyo’s commitment to resolving the matter through negotiations, stating that bilateral talks would remain a top priority for his administration.
Japan's trade negotiator and Minister for Economic Revitalization, Ryosei Akazawa, also weighed in, saying that Tokyo would intensify its efforts in tariff discussions with Washington. He stressed that Japan finds the proposed 25% duties on automobiles unacceptable, as they target one of the country’s most vital economic sectors.
"There is no point in striking a deal with the US without agreement on tariffs on autos, which is core to Japan's economy," Akazawa said. He also noted that Tokyo would not accept any externally imposed deadline, including the August 1 date mentioned by the U.S., when approaching negotiations.
