Japan Affirms Commitment to Diplomacy to Enforce Israel-Iran Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya declared on Monday that Japan remains committed to active diplomatic engagement aimed at guaranteeing the enforcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran.

This announcement came during Iwaya’s meeting in Tokyo with Jasem Al Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as detailed in an official statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry.

“Japan will continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts to ensure that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran is steadily implemented and that avenues for dialogue are reopened,” he stated.

Iwaya further voiced Japan’s expectation that the GCC will play a key role in stabilizing the volatile global oil markets, while urging enhanced political and economic collaboration between Japan and GCC nations.

Al Budaiwi underscored the critical role of dialogue among concerned countries to uphold regional stability, affirming the GCC’s ongoing dedication to promoting such communication.

Both officials shared deep concerns about threats to freedom of navigation and attacks on oil infrastructure, reinforcing the close partnership between Japan and the GCC to advance peace and stability in the Middle East.

The violent confrontation between Israel and Iran ignited on June 13, when Israel targeted Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian locations with airstrikes, resulting in at least 935 deaths. Iran’s Health Ministry reported 5,332 wounded in the attacks.

In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes that claimed at least 29 lives and injured over 3,400, according to data from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The United States also carried out bombings on three Iranian nuclear facilities located in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan during the hostilities.

This escalation occurred just days ahead of the sixth round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran and concluded with a US-mediated ceasefire that went into effect on June 24.
